Alva’s Payton Jones – Character Counts Presented By K&S Tire Inc

A character athlete is someone who shows great character both on and off the field of play. While they love the sport or sports they play, for them, it is also about more than just the game. Payton Jones says that it means a lot to her to carry this title. “Being called a character athlete is something that means a lot to me,” she says. “I am al-ways trying to do what is best for our school and our community.”
Jones, who is a senior, attends Alva High School. She plays point guard and guard for the Lady Goldbugs basketball team and also is a part of the track team. Payton has been play-ing both sports since she was in the first grade.
There are a few people in Jones’ life who she looks up to as role models in her life. “My parents, Jesse and Brandy Jones, and also my coaches have made a huge impact on my life,” she said. “I look up to them because they are the ones that give me the best advice and push me to be the best player and person that I can be.”
She has had a lot of good teachers throughout her education, but Payton says that there is one that stands out. “Dr. Smith would have to be my favorite teacher,” she stated. “She is my English teacher and she has taught me to always work hard and earn what I get.”
In order to be a success, Payton says that it all starts in practice. “It takes a lot of extra time like getting in the gym after practice and getting shots up,” she said. “And to always keep pushing myself to get better.”
Success is something that Jones and her basketball teammates are enjoying this season. They are off to a 6-0 start and ranked number eight in Class 3A. They have also won the Pioneer Tournament, where Payton was named tournament MVP.
Outside of athletics, Jones is also involved with Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the Student Council. After graduating from Alva, Payton will be attending SNU to continue her basketball and academic career.
