Alva’s Jazmia Walker – Oklahoma Army National Guard Spotlight

Jazmia Walker is a senior at Alva High School and is a new member of the Oklahoma Army National Guard. She is very involved in athletics running cross-country and track and playing basketball for the Goldbugs. Walker is also involved in they Key Club, FCCLA and FCA.

Walker joined the National Guard as a junior because she liked what they had to offer and for independence.

“I just felt like it was something that I needed to do for myself,” said Walker, “I’ve always done things with me and a family member, but this was something I just wanted to do on my own and for me.”

What ultimately swayed Jazmia to join was a visitor to her English class.

“We had a recruiter come to our school and the things I heard I liked, when I was younger I never thought of it even though I had family members in the military, but when he came to talk to us it made things clear and I decided to join,” said Walker.

Walker went to basic training at Ft. Jackson in South Carolina last summer and will go to her job training as a horizontal engineer at Ft. Leavenworth in Kansas this coming summer. After she finishes her training this summer, Walker will be stationed in Broken Arrow. She currently reports for duty once a month in Oklahoma City where they do basic training drills.

While she is in the National Guard Walker plans to study and accounting and hopes to attend the University of Oklahoma.
