HOOKER BULLDOGS
Coach: TREVOR POWERS
11-1
OFFENSE
It’s an exciting time to be a Bulldog from Hooker High School. The team went 11-1 last season, making it to the second round of the playoffs. This season, they are hungry for more. Cole Fischer (6-4, 210, Jr.) and Dillon Metcalf (6-4, 215, Jr.) are two powerful running backs the Bulldogs will lean on this season. Fischer rushed for 257 yards and five scores last year, while Metcalf makes the move from the offensive line to the backfield. Gavynn Parker (6-4, 190, So.) will start at quarterback after filling in for a couple of games last year. In those outings, Parker threw for 353 yards on just 16 completions with four TDs. Johnny Ugarte (5-10, 220, Sr.) will start at fullback and tight end. Ugarte racked up 300 yards and four TDs last season and is a three-year starter for the Bulldogs. Ugarte is the leader of this football team. Zeke Vega (5-9, 190, Jr.) is a speedster and a weight room freak. Vega will start at wide receiver this season. Last year he was the special teams player of the year. Efrain Castaneda (5-9, 225, Sr.) moves down the line to center.
DEFENSE
Metcalf is a beast at defensive end. Last year he recorded 84 tackles and 15 sacks with 27 tackles for loss. He is a two-time All-District player and a VYPE Top-100 selectee. Schools at the next level are starting to take notice of Metcalf. Ivan Figueroa (6-2, 240, Sr.) will play opposite of Metcalf, giving the Bulldogs two bookend defensive ends. Figueroa had 82 tackles and 12 sacks last season. Powers said, “these two shut down the edge.”
Ugarte and Fischer play linebacker in the Bulldogs’ 4-4 scheme. Ugarte is moving from defensive tackle to linebacker. Combined the pair had nearly 200 tackles and Fischer scored two defensive touchdowns last season. Yobani Cano (5-10, 185, Sr.) has worked hard to earn a spot on the defensive line and Jonathan Miller (5-10, 165, Sr.) is poised to be a full-time starter at free safety. “With 50-plus kids going out for football this fall, it will be a competitive atmosphere with very high expectations,” Powers said.
