Alva Spotlight Athlete: Dylan Whitely – Presented by Holder Drug
- Updated: January 10, 2019
The Alva Spotlight Athlete is on basketball player Dylan Whitely, a senior for the Goldbugs. Whitely is in his fourth year and comes off the bench for Alva. He takes pride in his role.
“I’m not one of our top guys, but I just try to come in off the bench and help the team anyway that I can, just trying to do my part whenever my number is called,” said Whitely.
Alva has gotten off to a bumpy start this season, but Dylan says the team is working to improve.
“It’s hard to pinpoint the reason for our slow start,” said Whitely, “the talent is there and we should be better, we’ve had good stretches, but we’ve had a tough time putting together complete games and ending up on the high side like we want to. We’ve been trying to improve our shooting a lot, because we haven’t done that well this year and really just trying to find better shots, also trying to get a good balance of getting it inside to our big guys.”
For the past three years Whitely has also played baseball for Alva, but won’t play his senior season. He has also been on the golf team for two years and hopes that not playing baseball will allow him some extra time to improve his golf game
this Spring.
“Baseball’s schedule in the past with so many tournaments and games has interfered with golf so I’m hoping to have a better season on the course since there is more free time to allow me to get better,” said Whitely.
Dylan is also a standout in the classroom. He currently holds a 3.5 GPA. Whitely just finished concurrent courses through Northwestern Oklahoma State in college algebra and psychology and will take college personal finance and college history during the Spring semester.
After graduating from Alva Whitely plans to attend Northwestern Oklahoma State University for his bachelors degree, but he has not decided on what he will major in.
